The Oregon House voted this last week to make it illegal to post a job advertisement discrimination against unemployed jobseekers. The proponents of this legislation say that job ads that exclude unemployed applicants is discouraging people who are struggling to make ends meet and find work in this tough economy. If the legislation passes, employers will still be able to choose to not hire unemployed workers, they simply can’t state so on an advertisement.
This legislation comes at a time when the unemployment rate in Oregon is 8.9 percent, the lowest it has been in the last three years. A Republican senator in favor of this new legislation stated that this law will send a message to employers that employment discrimination is not fair. Employment discrimination can take place in many different forms, including disability discrimination, sexual orientation discrimination, religious discrimination, age discrimination and more.
