Finding the right employment lawyer can be a daunting task. Here are helpful tips that can help you find the best attorney to help with your specific case.

Find an Attorney Who Specializes in Employment Law

The professional rules of conduct prevent attorneys from making claims on their specialty unless the bar in that particular state recognizes specialties. This means that you are not likely to come by a directory of employment attorneys offered by a professional body like you might find if you were looking for a dentist. However, you can search for attorneys on the Virginia State Bar lawyer lookup.

Find an Employment Attorney Licensed to Practice in Virginia

You can find out if the attorney you intend to work with is a member of the Virginia State Bar from referral sites like Avvo.com or nela.org. Additionally, most attorneys provide information on the states where they have passed the bar exam on their websites.

Choose a Lawyer Who Has Employment Law as Their Primary Area of Practice

Most practices offer some form of employment law services. For instance, attorneys who primarily practice intellectual property law, labor law, business matters, or general litigation may also dabble in Virginia employment law. Employment law attorneys can address non-compete agreements, discrimination cases, severance agreements, sexual harassment cases, EEOC questions, and wrongful termination claims. It is crucial that you work with an attorney whose primary focus is employment law.

Find a Lawyer with a Track Record of Successfully Representing Employees

If you search “employment lawyers” on Google, you may find attorneys who specialize in representing employers as well as those who represent employees. Often, such attorneys serve both practice areas.

HKM Employment Attorneys is a multi-state law group that handles many legal issues, but we give in-depth attention to each case. We can provide basic legal advice to help you decide whether it’s time to make a claim, bring civil litigation, or get help with employment contracts. Contact us for a consultation.
