Kirby Smart was appointed head coach of the University of Georgia in 2016, previously serving as the defensive coordinator for Alabama from 2008-2015 and the assistant head coach / defensive backs coach in 2007. Smart briefly coached safeties for the Miami Dolphins in 2006. Smart has worked at Georgia twice, in 2005 as running back coach and in 1999 as administrative assistant. Both of those relationships only lasted one year.
